I have hsv 1 and hsv 2, just found out the other day about type 2. In the process of trying to start a new relationship, so was wondering what the risks of transmission is through making out without an outback of any kind

    Almost all transmissions occur without a known outbreak. Some people carry the virus and don't even know it. It's that damn "viral shedding" that is a bitch. This means, you can transmit when, 1) you have an outbreak, 2) when you are experiencing viral shedding. The problem is you don't know when viral shedding is occurring in your body.

    The chance of transmission can be greatly reduced with viral suppressants, and a bit more with suppressants and condoms. Condoms only are not much use for protection from herpes. A condom only covers the penis. If you have outbreaks on your labia, thighs, butt, butt crack, etc, those are areas that usually experience skin to skin contact.
